Self care is an act of self love but it is also an act of necessity. As we juggle, work calls and cranky toddlers, running businesses, going to school , being mothers , wives and CEOs and still trying to fit in laundry and cooking time for ourselves most often doesn’t make the list. If self care does make the list it’s usually if we find the time to fit in somewhere in our day or we leave it as a last priority. There is little time and for many these days their even less money. So how do we care for ourselves? How important is it to our lives? Lets take a look.
Stress is one of the most prevalent factors in dis-ease. It causes a chain reaction between the brain and the immune systems, the adrenals, the hormones and over time the hormones that get released are pumped out so much that the body gets the signal to stop fighting other “invaders” like virus or infection. This lowers our immune system. It is vital to our health and well being to care for ourselves in what used to be thought of as lavish and pampering is now a must to combat stress, relax and give ourselves a much needed break. Self-care doesn’t need to cost a lot of money or any money at all. Here are some ways to Care for yourself and de-stress
Dry Brushing: Dry Brushing is an ancient method of releasing toxins through your skin. You can get a dry brush and most health food stores or online. Start at your toes and work your way up making circular motions toward your heart. It stimulates the nervous system. It may take some time to get used to but it’s so worth keeping at it. You will grow to love dry brushing before your bath or shower. It will become part of your ritual and you will feel better for it.
Essential Oils: After using the dry brush or just before you get in your shower or bath put a few drops of essential oil in a carrier oil such as almond, grapeseed, coconut, or jojoba and massage the oil into your skin. It feels great and your skin will be super soft. Some essential oils are lavender for calming, bergamot for uplifting and peppermint for over-exercised muscles.
Baths: A warm bath is a great way to end your day. You can choose to just close your eyes and meditate by concentrating on your breath, flip through a magazine that you haven’t had time to read or just relax and be grateful to yourself for giving yourself this gift of time and care.
Drinking tea: Isn’t their just something about tea that’s warm and nurturing and comforting? Find your favorite tea and savor a cup. This is something you can do for you all day long when you are feeling stressed. Allow the tea to represent the melting of the stress, let it remind you to breathe deep and ground you.
Yoga: We all know the many benefits of yoga and so it’s a wonder why we still don’t make it a priority for some of us. Decrease stress, increase flexibility, strength and posture while getting centered, and rejuvenating your cells are just some of the many benefits. Go to a class, get a DVD that you love, roll out your mat and keep it rolled out all the time so it’s always welcoming you to strike a pose (or a series of poses) when you have 10 or 15 minutes. It really only takes that short amount of time to rewire your brain from stress to rest.
Physical Activity: Walking, Jumping, running, anything to get your heart pumping will fight the stress and help you to handle all of life’s ups and downs. You will become more toned, release toxins through perspiration and pounding the pavement will help release all the stored stress in your muscles.
Journaling: is a great way to get out of your head. Put the worries on paper and release them into the universe. It will allow you to focus on what’s important and sometimes you realize those worries just got stuck up there and once on paper don’t seem so scary after all.
Meditation: You don’t have to be a monk, guru or a devotee of yoga to meditate. Meditation is one of the best ways to combat stress. Studies have shown that a person’s brain who meditates is wired differently which could explain why people who meditate claim an induced feeling of emotional balance and wellbeing. Get comfortable, close your eyes and focus on your breath. Don’t overcomplicate meditation, just focus on your breath and when you notice your thoughts, refocus on your breath. Start out with 5 minutes and increase your time by a minute very week.
Eating Whole Foods: Yes what you eat is a form of self care. What you put in your mouth is an act of love or self hate. I heard once that smoking is a form of self hatred, it makes a lot of sense, it is something that you put into your body that literally suffocates and kills you. Food is similar. Processed, sugary, and fatty foods will eventually cause disease in your body. It is a fact that whole foods allow you to thrive, feeding your body with the vitamins and nutrients you need to thrive in your life. You will feel better, look better and have more energy. What you eat changes the way you think, try it for a day. Eat healthy food all day, fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and see how you feel and think, and then for one day eat crap and see how you feel. More than likely on the day you eat the processed foods you will feel heavy, lethargic, guilty, maybe even depressed.
Take 10 minutes a day and choose a self care activity. Begin to schedule it into your iphone and calendar planners. Make it a priority on your to do list and I bet you will find that you are more calm, less stressed and become more grounded and centered as weeks go by when you make it a regular practice. Even 10 minutes will transform your outlook on your day and your response to it versus your reaction to what happens around you. Take time to reconnect to your Self. You may even discover the love you’ve been searching for all this time, the love of yourself.
