Psoriatic arthritis is a condition that develops in approximately 20 percent of all people afflicted with psoriasis. This disorder is autoimmune in nature – the body, in essence, turns on itself and causes swelling, discomfort and pain in different areas of the body. The condition is not contagious and it can be undetected for many years before it manifests. If caught early, treatment can be effective in limiting the possible severe damage that can result if it goes unchecked. Failure to treat the disease early can lead to serious damage to bodily tissue and joints.

The most common regions of the body that are affected are the ends of the toes and fingers. Psoriatic arthritis has also been found to affect the spine and back. The most common symptoms are tenderness, pain, inflammation and stiffness of the joints and soft tissue. Mobility can be affected due to the inflammation. Some of those affected describe feeling a loss of energy, while others develop eye problems and changes in the shape of finger and toe nails.

There is no specific time that the disease can manifest, but most cases happen after the age of thirty and before the age of fifty. Gender does not play a part – both men and women report an equal frequency of developing psoriatic arthritis. Less than ten percent of cases develop arthritis before skin lesions – a resulting symptom of psoriasis.

There are treatments available for this condition. One method is through the use of anti-inflammatory medication. Profound changes in lifestyle and eating habits have shown to improve response to treatment.

If you believe you have psoriatic arthritis, you should consult a doctor immediately.
